Working on ice

Some scenes of ice being cut on the Grand River in Elora, Ontario, for the 1994 film 'Trapped in Paradise'. The production company left the ice stacked up but removed it before spring floods as there was concern that properties along the river downstream would be damaged - I never heard anyone think that the Tooth of Time, the large rock on the falls, would be damaged! It is reinforced by concrete and not directly in the path of the ice, but the West Montrose "Kissing Bridge", the only covered bridge in Ontario, is made of wood and could easily have been damaged by ice if the water level was high enough.

Nicolas Cage stayed at the Elora Mill Inn, but the clerk told me he just stayed quietly in his room all night.

Chalk Outlines

In all but one of the crime scenes I've been to, evidence location was marked by flags or little signs, but I did see one homicide in London, Ontario in the mid-90s where there was a chalk outline of the body and marking other evidence locations. Using chalk at crime scenes is not recommended because it contaminates the area, but it might have been because it was in a busy location and the victim's body  needed to be removed to hospital. A STRAIGHT DOPE CLASSIC: Do crime scene investigators really draw a chalk line around the body?

UFO Resto, St-Simon-de-Bagot, 1994

The UFO Resto was a landmark on Highway 20 between Montreal and Quebec City. It was built by Jean Saint-Germain, an inventor. He had also built a pyramid, a mini-putt, and other novelties. It's now reported to be closed.  The robot, which was controlled by someone I guess in the kitchen, would bring you a tray with the food on it and could talk to you

The mini-putt - those look like huge Leslie speakers on the pole but I don't know if they spun around.

The Pyramid - people could go in it and do whatever you do in a pyramid - some sort of  New age spiritualism.

Les Paul bbq

Some time in the 1990s. Fire tore through the truck  Desmond Leahy.and Glen Olive of The Blushing Brides were driving to Toronto. They told me they heard the cans of hairspray blowing up from the heat  I stopped on the 401 and took photos. They crammed what was left of their gear into my car and I gave them a ride back home  and then dropped the pix off at the Star, They did make the show they had scheduled that night and the story made the next day's Toronto Star! 

And here they are looking much better! They thanked me from the stage!
