'Gutch' Salinas of  Kakhwí:io foods in Akwesasne shows me how flint (hard) corn is prepared. The grains are boiled in water with wood ashes, which produces an alkaline reaction in a process called Nixtamalization that softens the corn and releases nutrients. It can be pounded in a mortar into a flour that can be made into a mush with other ingredients like beans, or the grains of corn can be eaten as is.

Traditional Haudenosaunee longhouse recreation

This is a recreation of a traditional Haudenosaunee longhouse - several families of the same clan would live  in apartments in it. Women traditionally enter through the western door, men through the eastern one. Akwesasne, c. 1989

Women's Studies and a busty secretary

I took a Women's Studies course in 1982, "Introduction to Women's Studies,". It was the first one the University of Guelph had for its new Women's Studies program, and Leslie Marshall, a professor there had wanted to get men into it and talked to me about it. I was in a bad place as I'd come back from Europe and found a friend I really liked wouldn't talk to me any more and another had run up bills on the phone when I sublet my apartment to him. .I didn't really understand the course, One woman in the class that I liked was a smart and pretty woman with long brown hair and large breasts who I just decided to be mean to because I was mad at other people and riffed on her being a secretary. I saw her again two years later at a party when something else involving being betrayed was about to happen. She remembered me being mean.

A dog's memorial

When my father was dying in the hospital I found the closet open in his bedroom at home and his slipper on the bed. Our dog Punch had been taking it out and putting it on the bed. 1990. Ilford 120 film, dust removed by AI.

Dan Palmer. and mustache

Dan Palmer, epic mustache guy from Death by Stereo, playing at K of C hall, Cornwall, Ontario, September 15, 2026. One thing I hadn't seen before is the man who was running the mix board could use a tablet and stand in front of the stage to check adjust the sound remotely.

Angry building, Oregon or Washington, 1999

According to passersby, the builder had exceeded the permit height and the local government issued a stop work order. The builder did not take it well. I think this is Oregon coast but it could be Washington, 1999.

Narita, Japan, 1998

I guess I've been to Japan three times - I passed through it going back and forth to Thailand on my way to Malaysia in the fall of 1998, and as a destination in 2000.

I didn't have time to see Japan the first time, and the return I only had a bit of a layover - enough to take the train to Narita city and quickly see a temple. I had to use a cheap camera that I bought after I broke mine. I got out of the station and happened on the temple.

The street leading up to the temple looked like it had been a tourist destination for centuries. A shopkeeper said 'Good Morning' to me in English as he opened his shop for the day.
