Brigitte Mballa

Brigitte Mballa, author of “À ceux qui brise les chaînes,” (To Those Who Break the Chains), SD&G Library, Alexandria, Ontario, 16 May 2026

The book is about multi-generational trauma. I was impressed that she led her talk with a mention of the residential schools impact on the First Nations. I've found that new Canadians are more aware of the First Nations than people who were born here.

Barber Shop

"We're going to Rome, Barcelona. We're not going to the States, not until he's gone." - Man next to me in the barber shop yesterday, in Canada.

Crash kills 2

Waterloo Crash kills two - Twisted sign marks spot where two girls died and one critically injured in high speed crash Friday morning - January 1997.

I looked down after I took the photos and saw I was standing in blood and broken glass.

Inappropriate product placement

From 1997 -  I'm not sure where  I took this - somewhere in Ontario. Although the ham is an Equality brand product, they could have been sold in smaller grocery stores that were not part of the Food Basics chain. Obviously the kosher products and the ham should have not been beside each other.

Heron colony

Great blue heron colony (Ardea herodias) Grand Héron, c. 1990, Bull Island (also known as Dickinson Island), St. Lawrence River, Akwesasne.  Many of the trees on the island had died, probably due to the birds' acidic droppings and breaking branches to build nests.

Lower Town, Quebec City, c. 1989

I was in Quebec City from 1987 to 1990 - these are some photos I took I think in 1989 in Lower Town.

Fatal fire, 1990s, Guelph, Ontario

These kids were lined up like sparrows on the fence looking at the scene of a fatal fire, which I think included children, in Guelph, Ontario in the 1990s. The constable had come to shoo them away. A version I took just before the cop showed up ran in the Toronto Star, but I didn't get the negatives back.

Salon du Debosselage

Sometime in 1990

'Salon' is a bit of a joke, as it's more for a hairdressing shop.
I think this maybe the one near St-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha!, Quebec, according to the yellow pages "Fondé il y a plus de 30 ans par Berthier Thibault,"and now called Carrossier Procolor Cabano, with a new building, different from this Quonset hut.

Earliest memories

Early 60s - going to Granby zoo and to Niagara Falls. At Granby I was small enough for my mother to hold in her arms and the giraffe nibbled her hair. I remember an outdoor aquarium in the shape of a whale - the mouth was a glass wall with the fish behind.
