Ravens roost at night in huge colonies in the winter - I don't know why some are sitting on the ground - some would fly up into the trees - they have a social structure and they may be waiting on the ground for their sleeping mates. They also are thought to exchange information on good scavenging places, and they make lots of noise before they go to sleep.
